

This is a love song that appears in a wide range of sources from Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Egypt, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Each recording shows significant variation in the title, while multiple versions exist both in the lyrics and in the melody. Variations of this kind are a common phenomenon in oral tradition, and this particular song is no exception. Furthermore, it is worth noting that differences in word pronunciation can be observed among the various recordings. This aspect is particularly significant, since all the recordings examined in the present study come from Greek Jews, mainly from Thessaloniki. Therefore, one can only assume an even greater variety of pronunciations in the other Sephardic communities outside Greece. Here we present two recordings from the Flora Molho Archive, as well as additional sources.
